~~SUMMARY~~
Immortal-Edge-of-World-3D-Bookstack“What I was currently doing with my time and money . . . didn’t really deserve anyone else’s attention. If I was feeling romantic about it, I’d call it a quest, but all I was really doing was trying to answer a question I’d been ignoring for a thousand years.” In his very long life, Adam had encountered only one person who seemed to share his longevity: the mysterious red-haired woman. She appeared throughout history, usually from a distance, nearly always vanishing before he could speak to her. In his last encounter, she actually did vanish—into thin air, right in front of him. The question was how did she do it? To answer, Adam will have to complete a quest he gave up on a thousand years earlier, for an object that may no longer exist. If he can find it, he might be able to do what the red-haired woman did, and if he can do that, maybe he can find her again and ask her who she is . . . and why she seems to hate him. “You are being watched. Move your loved ones to safety . . . trust nobody.” But Adam isn’t the only one who wants the red-haired woman. There are other forces at work, and after a warning from one of the few men he trusts, Adam realizes how much danger everyone is in. To save his friends and finish his quest he may be forced to bankrupt himself, call in every favor he can, and ultimately trade the one thing he’d never been able to give up before: his life. From the author of Immortal and Hellenic Immortal comes Immortal at the Edge of the World, the breathtaking conclusion to the best-selling trilogy. Will Adam survive?

Adam’s back!

Yes, I actually squealed that when I first saw the cover for the third book in the Immortal series. It’s been two years since I last had an Adam fix and I’ve been waiting, and waiting, and waiting to find out what happens next.

Was it worth the wait, you ask.

Uh, yeah! And the fact that you even have to wonder that proves you’ve obviously not read the first two books in this series. Shame on you! They are a must read, and in order to follow the story you really need to read them before you get your hands on this one.

Now, I admit that the book was a little slower for me to get into up until the middle. Part 2 is really where it took off for me and flew by.

After a two year span between the last book and this one, I was so glad to see Doucette hadn’t lost that spark that is Adam. He’s still the same sarcastic immortal he’s always been. I’m always a little worried the author will lose what makes the characters special when there’s such a huge gap between books. Especially when they’ve put out new books and have gotten into the heads of new characters. Will they be able to go back and find that voice that made the character unique after so long? The answer to that when it comes to Adam is obviously a big hell yeah!

You can expect the usual thrilling adventure with this book. Questions the reader, and Adam, have are finally answered. Old friends are brought back. New friends are made. We experience loss and love and a big ‘ole surprise that not even Adam saw coming.

I’m sad to say goodbye to Adam, but I loved how the series was wrapped up.

Praise for Immortal at the Edge of the World
"Brilliant end to the trilogy, with much twistiness involved in tying up all the plotlines. Lots of humour and typical Adam-ness - but no spoilers from me. You'll just have to read it for yourself. I think this might be my favourite of the series.+  - Andrea Goodreads Review

Review: Fixer

Fixer

Title: Fixer
Author: Gene Doucette
Publishing Date: March 21, 2013
Source: Publisher
Summary (from Goodreads):

What would you do if you could see into the future?

As a child, he dreamed of being a superhero. Most people never get to realize their childhood dreams, but Corrigan Bain has come close. He is a fixer. His job is to prevent accidents—to see the future and “fix” things before people get hurt. But the ability to see into the future, however limited, isn’t always so simple. Sometimes not everyone can be saved.

“Don’t let them know you can see them.”

Graduate students from a local university are dying, and former lover and FBI agent Maggie Trent is the only person who believes their deaths aren’t as accidental as they appear. But the truth can only be found in something from Corrigan Bain’s past, and he’s not interested in sharing that past, not even with Maggie.

To stop the deaths, Corrigan will have to face up to some old horrors, confront the possibility that he may be going mad, and find a way to stop a killer no one can see.

Corrigan Bain is going insane . . . or is he?

Because there’s something in the future that doesn’t want to be seen. It isn’t human. It’s got a taste for mayhem. And it is very, very angry

I loved his Immortal series, so when I discovered a new Doucette book, you better believe I snatched it up as quickly as I could.

Fixer is another one of those books that you will not be able to put down. I love the way Doucette spins a tale—his writing style is just so fresh and new. The creativity that goes into his books is just something that makes you sit there and wonder how one man can be so bloody brilliant.

It’s not a romance novel by any means, yet I fell head over heels for Corrigan. I want a Corrigan. Big, strong, burly motorcycle riding piece of yum. Sure he might be a little crazy, but it’s the insane ones that will always keep things interesting.

But is Corrigan really insane?

No. Absolutely not. He’s as sane as I am….um, well that might not be a very good comparison. Okay, so maybe he’s slightly insane, but really it’s an insane that means well. Corrigan is a fixer—he uses his ability to see the future to stop life threatening accidents from happening. So you can understand how the man might feel a little loony when he’s living seconds ahead of everyone else in time.

The story is faced paced which is always good, but beware: you’re thrown back and forth into past and present flashes so fast that if you’re not paying attention you’re left wondering “wtf just happened?” Paying attention to this book shouldn’t be a problem though so you’re confusion level should be just fine.

As entertaining as the book is, once it was over it really made me stop and wonder about the concept of time, and if it’s really that easy to manipulate it. You’ll know what I mean when yhou read it for yourself. And trust me, you HAVE To read this book. If it’s the only book you read in 2013  make it Doucette’s. You know you’ve just read a truly amazing book when not only do you finish it feeling more than satisfied but you walk away from it pondering huge questions.

Hellentic Immortal by Gene Doucette

Hellenic Immortal

Title: Hellenic Immortal
Author: Gene Doucette
Publishing Date: May 3, 2012
Source: Publisher
Summary (from Goodreads):

“Very occasionally, I will pop up in the historical record. Most of the time I’m not at all easy to spot, because most of the time I’m just a guy who does a thing and then disappears again into the background behind someone-or-other who’s busy doing something much more important. But there are a couple of rare occasions when I get a starring role.”

--Adam the Immortal

An oracle has predicted the sojourner’s end, which is a problem for Adam insofar as he has never encountered an oracular prediction that didn’t come true . . . and he is the sojourner. To survive, he’s going to have to figure out what a beautiful ex-government analyst, an eco-terrorist, a rogue FBI agent, and the world’s oldest religious cult all want with him, and fast.

And all he wanted when he came to Vegas was to forget about a girl. And maybe have a drink or two.

“I am probably not the best source when it comes to who invented what. For a long time I thought I invented the wheel.”

--Adam the Immortal

The second book in the Immortal series, Hellenic Immortal follows the continuing adventures of Adam, a sixty-thousand-year-old man with a wry sense of humor, a flair for storytelling, and a knack for staying alive. Hellenic Immortal is a clever blend of history, mythology, sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, mystery and romance. A little something, in other words, for every reader.

                                Review

I’m always a little nervous when starting the second book in a series, especially if I loved the first book. Will it live up to my expectations? What if it doesn’t? What if I find it mind numbingly boring because of a crappy plot and characters that lost the zest they had in book one? Will the author’s eagerness to publish the next installment ruin what I loved about the series to begin with?

Thankfully, I didn’t have to worry about any of that with Hellenic Immortal.

Adam’s continued journey kept me intrigued and wanting more the entire read. Maybe even more so than Immortal did. I admit I didn’t read the summary before receiving the book – that may have had something to do with me being so damn excited to read it that I really didn’t care what it was about. However, considering how Immortal ended, I expected it to be about Adam going off to find “Eve”. Or maybe even a story about Adam and Clara.

Nope. Not even close. Of course if I had read the summary I would have realized that. The story was so much more than I expected and I once again loved every single page of it. The new supernatural characters Doucette threw into the mix actually made me want to research and see just how much truth there was to the gods he wrote about. Of course I knew some of them were true, but the fact that he made me want to learn more about ancient History is… well, pretty much a miracle.

I had a thing for Mike the second he appeared in Adam’s hotel room. And the more I learned about him, the more I loved him. That also might have had something to do with the mystery behind his being. And I really liked how it was revealed; how Mike didn’t seem to have a clue that he was different.

Ariadne. For a character that didn’t have a whole lot of story time, she sure made up for it towards the end. Although, because of the lack of face time she got in the novel, I found that I didn’t really have any feelings toward her one way or another. I didn’t care about her character or what happened to her even though she turned out to be a fairly important part. I didn’t dislike her, I just didn’t care.

I would have liked some returning characters, like the red-headed woman. It would have been interesting if she had somehow been tied into all that was happening, but I’m not terribly disappointed that she wasn’t part of the book – aside from the little glimpse Adam gets of her at the end.  The same can be said for Clara. Considering she’s now also an immortal I fully expected her to be  more apart of  Adam’s life, but the fact that she wasn’t didn’t really upset me either. And that’s only because Doucette made it to me by writing such fascinating new characters.
