Summary: (from Goodreads)
"As a wildlife rehabilitator in Southeast Louisiana, Pamela Wells has dealt with her fair share of wild animals, but her reclusive life is forever changed when she meets an elusive former soldier named Daniel Phillips. Sent to Pamela’s wildlife sanctuary as part of his parole requirements, Daniel and Pamela quickly clash until Daniel’s troubled past unexpectedly comes to light. After serving in Iraq, Daniel suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Pamela tries to help ease his condition by introducing him to the healing power of animals. Daniel begins to find peace, and an unexpected kindred spirit in Pamela. Fearing one day she will be forced to give up her beloved sanctuary, Pamela confides in Daniel about her debilitating health. United by their misfortunes, the relationship turns romantic.
Just when Pamela has found someone to love and share her burdens, Daniel skips town, crushing her heart. Suddenly Pamela finds herself alone and in a desperate situation. She has no choice but to turn to a ruthless Louisiana attorney, Bob Patrick, for help. Bob promises Pamela financial security in exchange for a life as his obedient wife. When Daniel unexpectedly returns, Bob is not willing to give Pamela up. Like an ensnared bird, Pamela struggles to free herself of her cruel capture. The fight may prove deadly, but Daniel is willing to do anything to save her. Can two broken souls eventually find happiness or, like the broken wings of a dove, will they be forever kept from reaching the heights of heaven."
Review
I admit I'm a sucker for anything Southern: food, accents, cities....men – not necessarily in that order. So throw me a book that's based in Louisiana and I'm yours. Make it a book based in Louisiana with one of the characters having a lot of bad boy qualities and attitude in the mix? Um, yeah. I won't be coming up for air until said book is finished.
Broken Wings is a touching story about a woman’s love for wild animals and her struggle to keep the wildlife sanctuary she runs for them afloat, all the while trying to resist temptation with the so called thug that is volunteering at her place.
I was hooked right from the very first paragraph. Pamela is a strong, independent woman who hates asking for help, yet is still under the thumb of her ex-husband when it comes to keeping her wildlife sanctuary up and running. You can feel the love Pamela has for her critters radiating off the page the way Weis writes her.
Of course, it didn’t hurt that she had Daniel stripping in the hot Louisiana sun within the first couple of pages either. Daniel is the perfect leading man with his attitude and troubled past. You can’t help but let him into your heart (and fantasies, ahem) just as Pamela soon found herself doing.
Bob. Oh, what can I say about asshole Bob? He was a great character to hate. And that’s all I feel for the lying, cheating, manipulating bastard. Hate. Nuff said.
But as much as I enjoyed the two main characters, my favourite would have to be Carol. She was hilarious with her one liners and just the kind of (somewhat) smutty friend I like to read about. She was awesome.
I loved the conflict and uncertainty in the book, however I felt that maybe the end was rushed a bit. However, it is still a beautifully written love story and one that you should check out if you’re looking for a new author to try.
** I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review
